Your day in Costa Maya
Mahahual for cruise guests: beach or Bacalar on your port day?
Enjoy Costa Maya with less time in transit. Compare Mahahual and Bacalar, work out your usable shore time and plan your return to the ship.
Quick answer
Can you visit Bacalar and return during a Costa Maya port call?
Yes, it can fit some calls, provided you have confirmed round-trip transport and enough time before all aboard. If the schedule is tight, Mahahual offers the beach, waterfront and a coastal activity with less travel. Decide using your actual usable time ashore, rather than the advertised length of the port call alone.
Your port call begins at Puerto Costa Maya. Mahahual’s waterfront and Bacalar Lagoon are different destinations: choosing one changes the pace of your whole day.
Our advice: choose one main experience, allow time to enjoy it and arrange your return. Share your ship, date and all-aboard time with the operator before booking.
01
First choose: Mahahual or Bacalar?
For a first visit with limited hours, stay in Mahahual: walk the waterfront, eat by the sea and, if timing and conditions allow, go snorkeling or take a boat ride. Bacalar is worth visiting, but means leaving the coast and planning your day around road travel. If it is your priority, book an excursion suited to your ship and avoid adding other long visits.

A simple example of your usable time
Suppose you are ready at the departure point at 09:00 and must be aboard at 16:00. Choosing to return to that point at 14:30 leaves 5 h 30 for the entire excursion. The remaining 90 minutes cover the final transfer, entry and a buffer. This is an illustrative example: your return point may require more time; adapt the times to your ship.
- 1
09:00 · Ready to leave
Disembarkation and the walk to your meeting point have already happened. A 09:00 port arrival does not mean your tour can start then.
- 2
14:30 · Agreed return
The entire excursion ends here in this example, including travel. A six-hour trip does not fit this 5 h 30 window.
- 3
16:00 · All aboard
This is the example’s boarding deadline, not the ship’s departure. The buffer chosen here is neither a universal rule nor a guarantee.

Bacalar is possible, but it is not next door
For a specific reference, NCL lists a six-hour Bacalar excursion with around 90 minutes of road travel each way.
Those figures apply to that excursion, not every lagoon access point. Ask for the total duration of your proposed trip, when the clock starts and how much time you actually get by the water. Do not add transfers twice if already included. If the plan only works when everything goes perfectly, choose somewhere closer.

From ship to town: agree on the meeting point
Puerto Costa Maya and Mahahual’s waterfront are separate places. Docking time is not pickup time: clearance to disembark, the pier walk, leaving the port compound and transport still come first.
Request a map pin and a visible landmark, check whether pickup is inside or outside the port, and confirm where the service ends. With children, limited mobility or strong heat, ask about walking distances and accessibility. Agree the fare and return pickup before leaving; avoid relying on finding a ride at the last minute.

Cruise-line excursion or independent booking?
Royal Caribbean distinguishes its excursions, with waiting for delays, from independent exploration, for which the ship will not wait. Check your own cruise line’s terms.
A third party’s “guaranteed return” does not mean the captain will wait. Get written details of the cover, what to do about delays and what happens if the call is cancelled. Save your booking, operator contact and the port agent’s details provided aboard so they are available offline.

|---|---|---|
| Beach and waterfront | Relaxing, eating and strolling with flexibility | Transport, spending requirements and agreed return |

| Bacalar | The lagoon is your priority and you have enough time | Round-trip travel, time on the water and boarding buffer |
Frequently asked questions
- Is a six-hour port call enough for Bacalar?
- Do not treat it as six hours for an excursion. Subtract disembarkation, meeting, return logistics and a buffer first. A tour taking the whole advertised call leaves no room for those steps. Ask about an option tailored to your ship or stay in Mahahual.
- Can I combine Bacalar, ruins and the beach?
- Only with an itinerary whose full duration and return are confirmed for your call. More stops mean less time at each one. For a relaxed visit, choose a priority and save the others for another trip.
- What if I arrive in the afternoon?
- Check which activities remain available and when they finish. Morning departures do not always have afternoon alternatives. A waterfront walk and a meal may fit better than a long excursion.
- Should I follow ship time or my phone?
- Confirm aboard which clock to follow and the all-aboard deadline. Sailing time is a separate detail: do not use it as the time to begin heading back. Save that day’s instructions.
